Shell: Mars Tension Leg Platform

Operations Support Activities

Asset Details:

The Mars TLP is a Gulf of Mexico development operated by Shell Exploration and Production, Inc. The platform is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 807, approximately 130 miles South East of New Orleans, and is moored in 3000ft of water. The platform began production in 1996 and commenced waterflood in 2004. Mars produces through both dry tree wells and through subsea tiebacks such as Europa.

Project Details:

GATE, LLC have been involved in a number of projects related to the Mars platform, including the following:

  • Trouble-shooting corrosion and materials problems encountered in day-to-day operation, including the development of process equipment failure assessment and inspection plans.
  • Corrosion risk assessment of both topsides processing and subsea production components. This also included a review of the corrosion monitoring system and provision of an efficient real-time capable upgrade, along with the development of a corrosion monitoring database to support operations staff on the platform.
  • Provision of consultancy and coordination services in relation to the development of a souring management plan for the asset. This also included the development of waterflood operating and monitoring criteria and additional consultancy services provided in relation to a nitrate injection trial in the North Sea and the application of nitrate injection to the Mars waterflood.
