BHP Billiton: Neptune / Shenzi

Chemical Systems Engineering and Reservoir Souring

Asset Details:

Neptune and Shenzi are both planned BHP Billiton developments in the Gulf of Mexico. Neptune will be situated in Atwater Valley Block 574 at an approximate water depth of 6200 feet, whilst Shenzi will be situated in Green Canyon Block 653 at an approximate water depth of 4300 feet. Both fields will be developed as subsea tie-backs to the host facility.

Project Details:

GATE, LLC have previously provided services to both the Shenzi and Neptune developments with respect to the following items:

  • Management of water sample quality verification and analysis (Neptune).
  • Review of scaling tendencies during primary depletion drive and following use of waterflood for secondary recovery (Neptune).
  • Prediction of souring tendency following waterflood and a study of the implications of this on field development, materials selection, operability, chemical treatment requirements and asset integrity management (Neptune and Shenzi).
  • Review of potential souring mitigation techniques for use in conjunction with waterflood operations (Shenzi).

GATE, LLC are presently providing Chemical Systems Engineering (CSE) support to the FEED studies presently underway for both the Neptune and Shenzi developments. The objective of the CSE role is to develop, manage and provide a focal point for the provision of a comprehensive chemical treating / engineering strategy for both of these fields.
